Projects support capacity building, economic and small business development

(firmenpresse) - IQALUIT, NUNAVUT -- (Marketwired) -- 05/02/13 -- Today, the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor), and Minister for the Arctic Council, announced federal investments for three projects in Nunavut to support economic growth and small business development in Nunavut.

"Our Government is proud to contribute to projects that will help build strong, sustainable and prosperous northern communities," said Minister Aglukkaq. "In collaboration with our partners, this investment will lead to a growth in existing businesses and the potential emergence of new businesses in key sectors of the northern economy."

CanNor funding of over $115,000 was provided for three projects. The projects include: increasing the awareness of financial and credit services provided by the Nunavut Business Credit Corporation (NBCC); preparing a community economic development plan for the Hamlet of Hall Beach so the community is ready to take advantage of economic opportunities stemming from potential mining activity in the area; and training and support services for thirteen Community Liaison Officers in the Baffin Region to improve delivery of Qikiqtani Inuit Association and Kakivak Association.

"With the contribution that we received from CanNor we were able to do our CED Plan. Our previous plan was ending at the end of March and with the help from CanNor we were able to have someone come in and help us do our CED Plan for the next five years. We appreciate CanNor for helping us to achieve our goal of developing our Community Economic Development Plan," said Shelly Brake, Senior Administrative Officer, Hamlet of Hall Beach.

"We really appreciate the support of CanNor for our project," stated Rita Mike, Chair of the Kakivak Association Board of Directors. "We are working to improve our service delivery in the communities and additional training for the Community Liaison Officers is an important part of this initiative."

"With the contribution we received from CanNor we were able to improve our marketing materials in all four official languages, and conduct a targeted print media campaign. This would not have been possible without the assistance of CanNor." Sherri Rowe, Chief Executive Officer, NBCC.

Investment in these projects was made possible through a number of CanNor's economic development programs including the Community Economic Opportunities Program (CEOP), the Community Support Services Program (CSSP) and the Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) program. CanNor is responsible for coordinating and delivering Canada's economic development across the North through its contribution programs, and for related policy development and research.
