Large Giacometti exhibition from 20 November at the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg

Giacometti"s vision of inscribing his figures with their own inherent space and their own inherent temporality is now put into practice by means of an exhibition architecture that has been tailor-made for his sculptures. The meticulously selected works are thus given a space that expands and heightens their aesthetics.

(firmenpresse) - For the first time in 12 years, the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg is presenting a comprehensive overview of Alberto Giacometti"s mature work in Germany. Around 60 sculptures will be displayed alongside more than 30 paintings and several drawings in the circa 2000 square meter exhibition space. The exhibition offers unique insights into the fascinating oeuvre of one of the most important artists of the twentieth century.

Giacometti"s vision of inscribing his figures with their own inherent space and their own inherent temporality is now put into practice by means of an exhibition architecture that has been tailor-made for his sculptures. The meticulously selected works are thus given a space that expands and heightens their aesthetics. In the process, it is clearly demonstrated how present the work of this artist, who died in 1966, is today as well as the unbroken influence it has had on subsequent generations of artists. With his completely innovative approach to the human body in relation to time and space, Giacometti (1901 - 1966) can literally - and that is one of the exhibition"s themes - be considered the founder of virtual space.

The exhibition organized in cooperation with the Museum der Moderne Salzburg presents central works in a close correlation to pieces from private collections and the artist"s estate. The core of the loans gathered together in Wolfsburg come from a large convolute in the Fondation Alberto et Annette Giacometti Paris that is being shown for the first time in this form in Germany. Further major loans come from the Alberto Giacometti Foundation in Zurich as well as major museums and private collections in Europe and the United States.

A bilingual (German/English) catalogue will be published on the occasion of the exhibition "Alberto Giacometti. The Origin of Space - Retrospective of the Mature Work". Price: 38 Euro.
The exhibition is supported by Volkswagen Financial Services AG and Pro Helvetia.
