Conclusion of Saarbrücken ORAC Symposium: great potential for ORAC values in healthcare and food industries
At the symposium, 150 representatives of the healthcare and food industries were offered information by specialists from science and business about the potential of the ORAC Method for measuring the antioxidant capacity of products. The symposium ended with unanimity among all the participants that validation of the ORAC Method by the Saarland company getvital HEALTHCARE offers a valuable opportunity for consumers to use a recognized quality standard to guide the complex choices they make while shopping. What is needed now is an extensive campaign by business and the media to provide information for the consumer. Leading companies have already shown their interest in the subject of ORAC.
(firmenpresse) - “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is a traditional saying. Unfortunately, things are not quite so simple, as research has now demonstrated. Apples have only an average ORAC value of 1000-2300 Orac/100gr. depending on the variety. The recommended daily consumption of Orac is 5000-7000 ORAC, with ORAC standing for Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity. The level of the measured ORAC value is related to the antioxidant effect of the natural substance or product. To put it simply: the higher the ORAC value, the better and stronger the antioxidant capacity of the measured product. The most recent findings and information from science, industry and commerce were presented and evaluated for the first time in Saarbrücken.
The 1st Saarbrücken ORAC Symposium was organized by getvital HEALTHCARE GmbH, a company based in the Saarland, together with the Saarland Chamber of Industry and Commerce and the healthcare cluster Saarland. The ORAC Method, further developed by getvital HEALTHCARE within the framework of a support program, will in future provide information for the health-conscious consumer about how effectively the natural antioxidants in a product work.
150 representatives of the healthcare and food industries met in Saarbrücken and attended lectures by scientists and business people. Their unanimous conclusion was that ORAC values have great potential for the healthcare and food markets. However, these values have not yet received sufficient attention. Much more communication and information are needed to raise the awareness of consumers and to convince them about the advantages of the ORAC Method. Companies are looking forward to receiving further evidence from scientists about the effectiveness of antioxidants.
The fact is that consumers sense that they are becoming less healthy. 59% want to reduce stress; 45% want healthier food. There is a large range of health products on the shelves, yet turnover is actually declining slightly. In this difficult area, the consumer is looking for quality indicators. New norms are needed to offer customers reliable information about the properties of products.
Around the world, and especially on the American and Asian markets, emphasis is placed on the anti-stress qualities of antioxidants, which neutralize the free radicals produced by the body due to stress. Global companies such as Nestlé, Kelloggs, Chiquita and others are already marketing their first products. Edeka Südwest launched a large advertising campaign last year. Globus Deutschland plans to do the same and hopes that industry will supply appropriate products. The health company “Salus Haus” is currently introducing ORAC-assessed food supplements in combination with the ORAXX bioxTest (information at www. oraxx.de) from getvital HEALTHCARE in German health food shops. Nestlé Deutschland has shown great interest, and is waiting to assess the level of acceptance among consumers. Maintal is launching the first rosehip jam, emphasizing its high ORAC value of 13000 Orac/100gr. Further products will follow, e.g. mixed spices from SHW-Golden Spices in Blieskastel.
The 1st ORAC Symposium was so well received that the 2nd ORAC Symposium is to take place in 2012. The proposed topics are food, fitness and health.
