Huntington Learning Center Helps Raise Families' Awareness and Understanding of Common Core State Standards
(firmenpresse) - ORADELL, NJ -- (Marketwired) -- 10/30/13 -- A recent survey by Gallup and Phi Delta Kappa (PDK) about public education shows that most Americans have never heard of the Common Core State Standards, the K-12 English-language arts and mathematics educational standards that have been adopted by most states and are being implemented across the nation. The annual PDK/Gallup Poll of the Public's Attitudes Toward the Public Schools revealed several alarming findings about the country's awareness of the state-led effort to reform American education:
62 percent of respondents said they have never heard of the Common Core State Standards.
Of the 38 percent who had heard of Common Core, many misunderstood the standards and how they originated. Many thought the standards were mandated by the federal government and that they cover every subject.
41 percent of respondents said they thought the Common Core would help American schools compete globally.
33 percent said assessment testing hurts school performance, while 22 percent said increased testing helps schools' performance.
Dr. Raymond Huntington, founder and chairman of Huntington Learning Center, stated that the misinformation about the Common Core State Standards is something Huntington is working to address. "Too many parents and students are unfamiliar with the Common Core State Standards and how they are meant to raise the bar on learning and ensure all students graduate high school ready to succeed in college and the workforce," said Dr. Huntington. "It is important for all of us in the education industry to talk with parents about Common Core, what it means for their students and how they can be supportive at home."
Dr. Huntington added that in the three years since the Common Core State Standards were introduced, Huntington has aligned its curriculum to the learning standards. The learning center is continually educating students and parents on how they will be impacted. "We know how overwhelming this initiative is for many families and we're working very hard to make certain that Huntington students are aware of the Common Core as curriculums and assessment tests change. Our job at Huntington is readying students for school success, and today, that means helping students navigate school post-Common Core implementation."
