Waalre, 22.November 2010 - ARCHEA service GmbH is one of six partners in a
three year joint research project to explore the use and value of enzymes
and enzyme mixtures in biogas plants.
The positive effect of enzymes on the anaerobic fermentation of herbal
co-substrates in biogas plants has already been demonstrated in several
analyses on the laboratory scale. Amongst other effects the enzymes were
accelerating the decomposition of hemicellulose and cellulose. The
researchers assume that this reduce the formation of scum in active biogas
plants and thus will lead to less work for the stirring unit and to a lower
energy demand of the plants.
So far, only some selected enzymes and substrates have been tested and the
reaction mechanisms have not yet been definitively determined. The joint
research project starting on 1st October seeks to continue these studies
and to test the results on a pilot plant scale as well as in practice.
Coordinated by Leibniz-Institut für Agrartechnik Potsdam-Bornim e. V. (ATB)
a total of six partners will explore the use of different enzymes and
enzyme mixtures in the anaerobic fermentation of corn silage, pig dung,
corn/corn-cob-mix, Sudan grass, clover-grass-mix and combinations of these
substrates. Based on the collected data the researchers will develop
material and energy balances in order to come to a comprehensive economic
and procedural evaluation of the use of enzymes. Then it will also be
possible to derive recommendations for the practical application, e. g.
regarding the optimal enzyme mixtures and the right timing of use within
the process.
The biogas industry is highly interested in such kind of research as
enzymes are already in use in existing biogas plants though the scientific
proof of their value is still pending.
The now starting three year project is sponsored with about EUR 1.7 million
by the Bundesministerium für Ernährung, Landwirtschaft und
Verbraucherschutz through its project executing organisation, Fachagentur
Nachwachsende Rohstoffe e. V. (FNR).
The project partners are:
- Archea Service GmbH
- Biogas Nord Anlagenbau GmbH
- Leibniz-Institut für Agrartechnik Potsdam-Bornim e.V. (ATB)
- ASA Spezialenzyme GmbH
- DBFZ Deutsches Biomasse Forschungszentrum gemeinnützige GmbH
- Prüf- und Forschungsinstitut Pirmasens e.V.
'We are excited about being part of such an important project with these
renowned partners. The public sponsorship emphasizes the high relevance of
its results for the whole biogas industry. The increase of biogas yield and
substrate efficiency will be the major challenges for the industry in the
future,' says Oliver Nacke, Member of the Management Board of ARCHEA Biogas
N.V.
