(firmenpresse) - WASHINGTON, DC -- (Marketwired) -- 09/17/14 -- , the largest trade group dedicated to advocacy, awareness and education in the vapor products industry, favors a national standard for child-resistant packaging for all vapor products such as electronic cigarettes to avoid the possibility of accidental ingestion of e-liquids containing nicotine.

To that end, SFATA has sent a letter outlining its support of appropriate federal regulation to Chairman Jay Rockefeller, Ranking Member John Thune and all members of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation. Bill S. 2581, which requires child-resistant packaging for vapor products, is scheduled to be considered by the Committee on Wednesday.

"It's vital that vapor products are made safe and accessible only to adults," comments Cynthia Cabrera, SFATA Executive Director. "A national standard for child-resistant packaging is the most efficient way to safeguard the public interest while continuing to offer adult smokers an indispensable alternative to toxic combustible cigarettes. This legislation is a good start, and we look forward to continuing to work with Congress."

SFATA had previously endorsed the goals of the bill upon its introduction in July 2014. In addition, it has instituted "Age to Vape," a program for its retail store members that will further codify the industry's commitment to sensible age restrictions. The association and its members support many other commonsense regulations, including a national age standard for the sale of vapor products and e-liquids.

SFATA members are small-and medium-sized business owners who have joined together to promote responsible business practices and to ensure that the vapor products category may continue to grow and innovate.

Concluded Cabrera, "Our industry was started by innovative, entrepreneurial companies who understand the potential vapor products may have to eliminate the public health scourge of combustible tobacco products. We hope the bill helps move us towards appropriate regulation of vapor products, while continuing to make them available to adult consumers looking for an alternative to cigarettes."
