KTG Agrar: Farmland reaches size of 47,000 soccer pitches
14.04.2011 / 07:30
---------------------------------------------------------------------
- Farmland expanded by 3,000 ha to 33,500 ha
- Most of the 2011 harvest sold
- Very decent margin expected for 2011
Hamburg, 14 April 2011 - KTG Agrar AG (ISIN: DE000A0DN1J4) expanded its
position as a leading European agricultural company last year and has
started the 2011 season on an optimistic note. Compared to March 2010, the
company's farmland in east Germany and Lithuania increased by roughly 3,000
hectares. Specialising in the cultivation of organic and conventional food
crops, KTG Agrar now manages some 33,500 hectares, which is equivalent to
the size of about 47,000 soccer pitches.
Approx. 26,400 hectares are located in east Germany, with 7,100 situated in
Lithuania. The company has been active in the full EU member state since
2005. At approx. 4,000 hectares, this is where most of the company-owned
farmland is situated; in east Germany KTG owns approx. 2,500 hectares. The
remaining farmland is leased under long-term contracts for more than ten
years.
'We have operated in the agricultural sector for over 15 years,' says
Siegfried Hofreiter, CEO of KTG Agrar. 'Our farms are firmly rooted in east
Germany and Lithuania, and in the meantime we primarily grow through
farmland that is actively being offered to us.' KTG Agrar intends to
continue its growth and plans to expand its farmland by about ten percent
per year. The potential is huge - in east Germany alone, some 1,000
agricultural businesses will have no successor in the coming years. 'The
agricultural sector has experienced a renaissance in the past years. But
unfortunately there is still a lack of young people who are interested in
our line of business', says Siegfried Hofreiter
The Hamburg-based company is optimistic about the year 2011. By adding to
its farmland, KTG Agrar has already laid an important foundation. Moreover,
the company took advantage of the high prices of agricultural commodities
and sold about 60 percent of the 2011 harvest in the past months. At this
stage, everything suggests that the harvest will be good, as the winter
grain sown in the autumn has fared well through the cold months.
'We bought our main supplies such as potash and nitrogen for 2011 at low
prices in the first half of 2010, which is why we expect a very good EBIT
margin for this year,' says Siegfried Hofreiter. On the cost side, the
company additionally benefits from the operation of its own biogas plants.
The fermentation residues produced in these plants is an excellent natural
fertiliser, which reduces the company's dependence on external fertiliser
suppliers.
