(firmenpresse) - Hamburg. 2014 has been a record year for Hamburg’s harbor on different levels. According to Port of Hamburg Marketing (HHM) the Port of Hamburg achieved its best-ever result in 2014 with a total throughput of 145.7 million tons, representing a growth of 4.8 percent,. Up by 6.1 percent at 102.7 million tons, general cargo throughput was outstanding. A 1.7 percent increase in bulk cargo throughput to 43.0 million tons also contributed to the new record for Germany’s largest universal port.
HHM also mentions that at 9.7 million TEU (20-ft standard containers), Hamburg’s container throughput achieved a growth of 5.1 percent, above average for ports in Northern Europe and just missed a fresh record of ten million TEU mark, which is now the aim for 2015. Strong growth in container throughput is primarily attributable to a 9.8 percent jump in container services with China.
A company that knows well how important China has become in the logistics sector is the akf siemers Group, located directly at the harbor. “Our clients from the machinery and plant engineering sector profit from our location and our international services”, says Marc Briese, Managing Director of the akf siemers Group.
One of the successful international projects was the shipment of a cement plant to Thailand. Approximately 40,000 freight tons (FRT) and 1,000 containers were shipped from Europe to Laem Chabang in Thailand. “adl logistics, our strong partner in Thailand, helped us realize this project”, says Briese gratefully. But while they were well-accustomed to the temperatures during this project, the akf siemers Group had to deal with minus degrees during another one.
On the Disco Island off the coast of Greenland, a bottling plant for mineral water was disassembled, packed, and transported back to Germany by the packaging company. 17 containers contained plant parts. Two other containers held tools, a forklift, and surplus material. The purpose-specific boxes of the packaging company weighed between 4.1 and 12.6 tons respectively. The total net weight was 78 tons, while the gross weight was 98 tons (without containers).
Besides realizing major projects, the packaging company was able to strengthen their relations with partners and clients from the machinery and plant engineering sector even further. “We have become stronger with our partners Shanghai Sunnew in China and adl logistics in Thailand”, explains Briese.
The akf siemers Group sees a lot of potential in the relations between Asia and Hamburg in particular – and the estimation of the packaging and logistics company is correct. Hamburg profits particularly from the two-dimensional growth of container traffic in Asia. Especially China – with its growth of 12.8 percent – is responsible for the enormous success of the maritime, international trade of Germany’s largest universal harbor.
