Wärtsilä to ensure energy availability in Timor-Leste
(Thomson Reuters ONE) -
Wärtsilä Corporation, Press Release, 29 September 2017 at 10 am EEST
The technology group Wärtsilä will ensure maximised lifetime and guaranteed
performance of the Hera and Betano power plants, located in Timor-Leste, in
Southeast Asia. The five-year operation and maintenance agreement with the
government of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste was signed in the second
quarter of 2017.
The two power plants are monitored in real time as part of Wärtsilä Condition
based maintenance services to evaluate the installations' performance and ensure
efficient and optimised operations. The agreement also includes training of
local staff to allow them to independently operate and maintain both power
plants. Wärtsilä has been in charge of the operation and maintenance of the
power plants since 2012.
The Hera and Betano power plants are vital electricity sources for Timor-Leste,
serving local households, offices, hotels and industries, as well as the
country's port and airport. The Hera power plant is situated in northern Timor-
Leste, near the country's capital Dili, and it has an output of 119 MW. It
started operations in December 2011. The Betano power plant, situated in the
southern part of country, has an output of 136 MW and started operations in May
2014. Wärtsilä supplied the power generating sets and other related equipment
for both plants and the Inur Sakato power plant.
"This operation, maintenance and training contract with Wärtsilä will help us to
ensure stable electricity supply in Timor-Leste," says Virgilio Guterres, the
Director General of Electricidade De Timor Leste (EDTL), the operator of the
power plants. "As the technology provider of the Hera and Betano power plants,
Wärtsilä was the best candidate to support our vision of future's power plant
operation by local Timorese."
"Wärtsilä has extensive experience in building, operating and maintaining power
plants. We are proud to take the responsibility of the operation and maintenance
of these plants. The customer can focus on the future development of the power
supply infrastructure of the country, knowing that Wärtsilä guarantees the
performance and ensures reliable operations of these two power plants," says
Erwin Vanderkerff, President Director of Wärtsilä Indonesia.
