(Thomson Reuters ONE) - Carl-Henric Svanberg, president and CEO of Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC),yesterday stressed the critical role Information and CommunicationTechnology (ICT) plays in achieving a balanced and effective globalclimate change treaty at the annual UN Leadership Forum on ClimateChange in New York.Addressing the UN Secretary General, heads of state and businessleaders, Svanberg outlined contributions the ICT sector can make increating a low-carbon 21st-century infrastructure and encouragedleaders to bring ICT onto the agenda for the upcoming United Nationsframework Convention on Climate Change in Copenhagen (COP15) inDecember."We owe it to future generations to leverage on technology that isavailable today, and failing to recognize this potential couldjeopardize the world's success in reducing CO2 emissions," saidSvanberg. While studies have shown that ICT can reduce global CO2 emissions 15percent by 2020, Ericsson believes reductions could be even greaterwith an innovation-driven climate agenda."World leaders are focused on an agenda that must deliver some 50 to80 percent emission cuts by 2050," said Svanberg. "In order toachieve this magnitude of reductions, we must move away fromincremental emission reductions to more transformative ones which candeliver measurable savings and smarter ways of doing things. ICT canincrease quality of life while dramatically reducing emissions."The GSMA, the body representing the worldwide mobile communicationsindustry, also played a key role at the Leadership Forum on ClimateChange and commended the efforts of Ericsson."Both Ericsson and the mobile industry are committed to greaterenergy efficiency and together we can also be a low carbon catalystfor people and machines," said Rob Conway Chief Executive Officer andMember of the Board of GSMA.Svanberg shared this same message with Nordic business leaders andthe UN Secretary-General last May at the World Business Summit onClimate Change in Copenhagen. There, Svanberg stressed the importanceof moving away from dealing with emissions after they have alreadyoccurred, and instead focus on moving ideas, not people, withbroadband being society's new highways."Modern ICT solutions, ranging from education and informationservices, smart grids, e-health as well as intelligent transport, cangive access to vital services all over the world, without sacrificingour environment," said Svanberg. "Investments in ICT can alsostimulate economic growth."Through innovative solutions, mobile is able to lower emissions anddrive energy efficiency in other sectors but it can also improvecommunication, health, distribution, education and otherindispensable services in low-income areas.Svanberg concluded his remarks at the Leadership Forum urging worldleaders to work together to find solutions that will create acarbon-lean economy.Mr. Conway concurred: "Therefore we call upon governments and theCOP15 to ensure that mobile solutions are at the vanguard of theglobal fight to prevent climate change and mitigate its consequence,"he added."Change will require the commitment and actions of all levels ofsociety, governments, industry, civil society and individuals," saidSvanberg. "A committed global effort at COP15 is essential to secureboth environmental sustainability and economic development, and ICTshould be at the heart of this."Notes to editors:Ericsson's standard multimedia content is available at the broadcastroom at www.ericsson.com/broadcast_room.WWF and Ericsson cooperation projectsA Five-Step-Plan for a low carbon urban development:http://alturl.com/5i2zCommunication Solutions for Low Carbon Cities:http://alturl.com/7anfEricsson is the world's leading provider of technology and servicesto telecom operators.
