MSPCA-Angell Unveils Law Enforcement and Service Dog "Vanguard" for the Walk for Animals

Winner of the MSPCA-Angell/Boston.com "Leader of the Pack" Contest Will Serve as Grand Marshall


(firmenpresse) - BOSTON, MA -- (Marketwire) -- 09/06/11 -- The today unveiled the special contingent of law enforcement and service dogs that will walk at the head of the parade during the annual , which will take place on Sunday, September 11, 2011. Walking at the front of the Boston parade will be a number of dogs from the Boston Police Department, Wellesley Animal Control and a myriad of other service dogs who enable their disabled human companions to live normal lives.

Joining the service dog vanguard will be the winner of the MSPCA-Angell/Boston.com "Leader of the Pack" contest. The winning dog will serve as Grand Marshall and will be selected from entries submitted by pet owners via the .

The annual Walk for Animals, a cornerstone of the MSPCA-Angell's community relations and fundraising efforts, takes place on the Boston Common on Sunday, September 11 at 11:00 a.m. For full details and to register for any of the walks please click .

The Boston Police Department's special operations K-9 unit will participate in the Walk as well as in pre- and post-Walk demonstrations in which attendees can see first-hand how masterfully trained these dogs really are. Boston Police Sgt. Frank Flynn will wow the crowd by putting a special ordinance tracking dog through its paces -- hiding a fake ordinance among the crowd for the dog to find. Sgt. Flynn leads the Boston Police Department K-9 unit, which consists of 20 dogs and their respective handlers, including nine Patrol/Narcotics teams, one Patrol/Ballistic Detection team and 10 EOD/Ballistic Detection teams.

Joining the Boston Police Department's K-9 will be Wellesley Animal Control. Led by Director Sue Webb, the Wellesley Animal Control department works tirelessly to protect stray, injured, abused and unwanted animals.

Drs. Susan O'Bell and Joel Kaye of Angell Animal Medical Center will be on-site throughout the day for walkers and visitors alike to ask pet health-related questions.
