Developer of the Popular "Uncharted" Video Game Series Relies on Brocade Network to Support and Manage Over 12 Terabytes of Digital Data per Day

(firmenpresse) - SAN JOSE, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 09/27/11 -- (NASDAQ: BRCD) today announced that leading video game developer, Naughty Dog, is using Brocade® to provide a cost-effective, high-performance and scalable solution to expedite its video game rendering and modeling needs, which fundamentally changed with the release of Sony PlayStation 3.

The demand for high-definition video is increasing, and changing the way companies do business within themselves and with customers. Companies using high-definition video and graphics need technology that can reliably and quickly deliver incredibly large amounts of data to different parts of their network. Brocade helps companies meet this need by providing networking solutions that simplify the overall network architecture while providing an extremely fast, scalable solution.

, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Computer Entertainment, is best known as the developer for creating Crash Bandicoot and popular titles such as the "Jak and Daxter" and "Uncharted" series for PlayStation. In a fast-moving business like Naughty Dog's, which requires massive amounts of network performance on a daily basis, any delay in production or product launch could result in the loss of millions of dollars and market leadership.

"Having a reliable network and solid support were two of the most important qualities we were looking for during our selection process," said Justin Monast, director of information technology at Naughty Dog. "We needed an incredibly fast network that we could count on and Brocade was able to deliver. The solution allows us to push our network to the limit without having to worry about bottlenecks, and it allows the programmers to develop beyond their expectations."

Naughty Dog's developers regularly download 50 gigabytes of data to their desktops, the amount on a typical Blu-ray disc. Currently, the more than 240 employees at Naughty Dog can create as much as 4.0 terabytes of digital data a day. As the demand for more graphic-intensive video games increases, so will the amount of data and traffic traveling across the company's network. The company is currently evaluating a migration path to higher-performance networking technologies, including more 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) networking, and plans to evaluate 100 GbE capabilities in the near future.

According to Gartner(1), "The enterprise networking core now increasingly uses more 10 Gbps interconnections between switches. To meet high-end architectures, an individual core switch must support many hundreds of Gbps connections and have dense, wire-speed, low latency 10 Gbps capabilities."

Specifically, Naughty Dog has deployed Brocade 10 GbE switches for its production network, which provides the ability to scale up to dozens of 10 GbE ports and hundreds of 1 GbE ports per chassis, with a lower total cost of ownership (TCO). Naughty Dog uses a FastIron SX 1600 as the core switch, outfitted with 10 GbE dual port cards for its main servers.

This Brocade network infrastructure has allowed Naughty Dog to perform backups of 10 to 12 terabytes within eight hours, with backups done at night so they do not impede network performance during development hours.

"Performance-centric companies such as Naughty Dog need a reliable and scalable network infrastructure to be successful and keep up with their networking demands," said Joe Ammirato, senior director of product management for Brocade. "The Brocade FastIron SX family delivers , which is necessary for companies whose business success depends on constantly providing lightning-fast access to data."
