The GW-MFA Department of Emergency Medicine Joins the Washington Redskins and GlaxoSmithKline for Timeout for Military Veteran's Health

(firmenpresse) - WASHINGTON, DC -- (Marketwire) -- 10/18/11 -- The Department of Emergency Medicine at The George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates (GW-MFA) is pleased to announce its participation in the 4th annual Timeout for Military Veterans Health -- a free health screening and educational event in recognition of Veterans Day.
The event will take place at the Redskins Locker Room, FedExField, Landover, MD on Saturday, October 29, 2011 from 10a.m. to 3p.m. Physicians and staff from the GW-MFA Department of Emergency Medicine will provide a screening program for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) to veterans and their families, age 65 and above. An AAA is a dangerous enlargement of the aorta, the major vessel carrying blood from the heart to the intestines and legs. The screening program aims to reduce the risk of aortic aneurysm rupture in individuals who are screened.
"Early Identification of individuals who have an aortic diameter of greater than 3.0 cm will allow earlier, elective management and could prevent the development of a severe emergency situation," said Hamid Shokoohi, M.D., Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at The George Washington University School of Medicine.
"Our medical team of specialists in Emergency Medicine will be providing screening ultrasound examinations of the abdominal aorta to detect diameters of greater than 3.0 cm. There is good evidence that such screening can improve individual health by reducing mortality related to aortic aneurysms. This test is recommended by the U.S. Preventive Service Task Force for men aged 65 to 75 with a history of cigarette smoking," said Dr. Shokoohi. "We look forward to providing this important health screening to our veterans and hope that we can further improve the overall awareness of aortic aneurysm in the local community."
Dr. Shokoohi will be joined by Keith Boniface, M.D. and an experienced team of GW-MFA emergency physicians and volunteer staff. The actual screening test takes about 5 minutes and involves no radiation, discomfort, or risk to the patient. Ultrasonic images of the abdominal aorta are obtained and the exact size of the aorta is determined by a computer.
