Wärtsilä wins major ship design contract for 12 vessels to be built
in India

Thecontract calls for a total of 12 Offshore Supply Vessels (OSVs) to bedesigned by Wärtsilä and built by Pipavav, for delivery to ONGC - Oiland Natural Gas Corporation Ltd, which is the largest oil and gasproducer in India. The yard is scheduled to begin production of thefirst seven vessels in the first quarter of 2010.Wärtsilä's strong track record in producing consistently highperformance and cost effective designs was clearly a key factor inthe company's design being the one chosen from a highly competitivefield of global ship design companies."This represents a landmark order for Wärtsilä Ship Design, and isthe result of many years of dedicated work by our team in Singapore.The design criteria for these vessels were stringent, and meet thelatest demands of fire fighting and dynamic positioning capabilitiesfor search and rescue standby support," comments Ove H. Wilhelmsen,Managing Director of Wärtsilä Ship Design in Singapore.ONGC originally invited participation from ship designers andshipyards worldwide for its pre-qualifying tender. Of the sixshipyards subsequently shortlisted, four of the tenders submittedwere based upon Wärtsilä designs. Pipavav Shipyard, who workedclosely with Wärtsilä Ship Design throughout the tendering process,was awarded the contract for all 12 vessels. Building of the vesselsis to be completed within 30 months. The value of the contract wasnot published.The 59 metre vessels are designed to achieve a speed exceeding 12,5knots, and will provide back-up for search, rescue and standbysupport. They will also transport cargo between ONGC's supply baseand its offshore installations.Wärtsilä has a global ship design organisation with major hubs inEurope and Asia. The Wärtsilä Ship Design organisation is capable ofgenerating a variety of new designs, from low-cost standard vesselsto high-end tonnage.
