Quiz for 2011 National Drug Facts Week to Be Unveiled

(firmenpresse) - BETHESDA, MD -- (Marketwire) -- 11/01/11 -- Teens and drug abuse researchers will connect for the second annual National Drug Facts Week, held Oct. 31 through Nov. 6. Through community-based events, interactive online activities, and contests, this week-long observance encourages teens to get facts from scientific experts about drugs and drug abuse. It is sponsored by the , a component of the National Institutes of Health.

"National Drug Facts Week is designed to counteract the many drug abuse myths that bombard today's youth," said NIDA Director Dr. Nora D. Volkow. "We have learned that teens are craving factual information about drug risks and dangers to help them make smart choices."

NIDA encourages teens and parents to "get the facts" and in by taking the , a 10-question multiple choice quiz that teens and adults can take to test their knowledge about drugs. Talking with teens about drug abuse makes a difference: teens who consistently learn about the risks of drugs from their parents are up to 50 percent less likely to use drugs than those who do not; yet, only 37 percent of teens report learning a lot from their parents.

Community-based question and answer sessions between teens and scientists are also planned nationwide during . Information about local events can be found at: .

NIDA will also host its annual on Tuesday, Nov. 1 where students participate in a live, Web-based Q&A with NIDA scientists, including Dr. Volkow, to get the scientific, factual information they need to make healthy decisions.
