(Thomson Reuters ONE) - Wärtsilä Corporation, Trade & Technical Press release, 1 December2009China Shipping Container Lines Co., Ltd. (CSCL), part of the ChinaShipping Group (CSG), has chosen Wärtsilä main engines for eightcontainer vessels. The Wärtsilä engines for this order will be builtunder licence by Doosan Engine, Korea. Wärtsilä, the marineindustry's leading ship power system integrator, will supply apackage of support services for this order, which was placed inOctober. The ships are to be built at the Jiangnan Changxing shipyardin Shanghai."The low fuel consumption across many load parameters was the keytechnical reason to select the Wärtsilä common rail 2-stroke engine,"commented Mr Li Xueqiang, deputy GM of CSCL, who added: "This is apartnership with Wärtsilä forever. Service quality and engineperformance are the most important facts for a successfulpartnership."The CSG fleet is largely powered by Wärtsilä engines, and currentlyhas more than 310 Wärtsilä engines in service, including close to 100low speed main engines and more than 210 four-stroke engines. About75 Wärtsilä engines are contracted to be delivered during 2010-2012,including more than 20 low speed main engines and 55 four-strokeengines.This latest order, however, marks the first order for Wärtsilä mainengines for CSG's container vessel fleet, which is ranked amongst theworld's leaders in terms of operating capacity. This order calls for Wärtsilä to supply its 7-cylinder RT-flex68TDcommon rail 2-stroke engines for the eight 4700 teu containervessels. The selection of this particular engine type came after CSGscaled down the original speed specified in the design, in line withthe downturn in the shipping market, to a maximum of 18 knots.Wärtsilä's support services for this order will include RT-flexengine training at the Wärtsilä Services facilities in Shanghai usingan RT-flex electronic simulator. Additionally, a single RT-flex railunit will be specially manufactured to enhance the hands-on basicoperational training courses. These courses will primarily target theChinese crew who will operate common rail 2-stroke engines in thefuture.Long-standing relationshipCSG continues to develop its partnership with Wärtsilä, adopting manydifferent products and services into its various business areas. Forexample, CSG's Tanker division, the largest sea-borne tanker fleet inChina, has recently taken possession of six product tankers fittedwith Wärtsilä RT-flex50 and RT-flex58TB main engines, Wärtsilä Auxpac20 auxiliary engines, as well as Wärtsilä fixed pitch propellers andthrusters. In total, 80 Wärtsilä Auxpac 20 auxiliary engines havebeen ordered, including 33 engines already in service.Currently, four VLCC projects and eight VLOC projects with WärtsiläRTA84TB main engines and Wärtsilä Auxpac 20 auxiliary engines areunder construction. Similarly, four Ropax projects with Wärtsilä 32four-stroke engines and Wärtsilä 20 Auxpac auxiliary engines are alsoongoing. During the past three years, Wärtsilä Services in China hassupported CSCL's operation of almost 130 sets of Wärtsilä 32auxiliary engines via a service agreement. Under this agreement, equipment and parts are continually rolled-over on an exchange basisfrom one vessel to another. This greatly reduces the overhaul timeonboard since preparations can be made in the workshops to be readyfor the next CSG ship. It has been a particularly successful model."Our long-standing relationship with China Shipping Group is based onmutual respect for each others' expertise and professionalism. We atWärtsilä are committed to supplying propulsion units that meettoday's needs in the areas of fuel savings and emissions reduction, and to supporting our customers with flexible and efficient serviceand technical assistance," commented Mr Andrew Stump, Sales Director,Ship Power Merchant, Wärtsilä in China.Since CSG was founded in 1997, it has developed five specializedshipping fleets of oil tankers, tramps, passenger ships, containervessels and special cargo ships, comprising more than 440 vesselswith an aggregated deadweight of 18 million tonnes, and an annualtraffic volume of over 390 million tonnes.Wärtsilä will be exhibiting at the Marintec exhibition in Shanghai,China, 1-4 December on stand number 2G41 in Hall 2!Media contact:Ms Marit Holmlund-SundSenior Manager, PR and Marketing CommunicationsWärtsilä CorporationDirect tel: +358 10 709 1439Direct fax: +358 10 709 1425e-mail: marit.holmlund-sund(at)wartsila.comInternet: www.wartsila.comWärtsilä in brief:Wärtsilä is a global leader in complete lifecycle power solutions forthe marine and energy markets.
