Media Advisory: Governor General to Participate in South Pole Allied Challenge Announcement
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 04/18/13 -- His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, and the Department of National Defence will announce Canada's participation in the South Pole Allied Challenge, on Friday, April 19, 2013, at 9:30 a.m., at National Defence Headquarters, in Ottawa.
Two Canadian Forces members of the Soldier On program will be participating in the challenge, which will involve three international teams racing for the Geographic South Pole. His Excellency will deliver remarks on this occasion.
"It is difficult to imagine a greater physical and mental challenge than an expedition to the South Pole-one of the most inhospitable landscapes on Earth," said His Excellency. "As commander-in-chief, I am inspired by the courage and determination of the two soldiers who are embarking on this expedition, and by all those who are striving to recover, to rehabilitate, and to reintegrate after being injured."
About the Soldier On program
Soldier On is a Canadian Forces Personnel and Family Support Services program. Founded in 2006, it empowers Canadian Forces members with visible or non-visible injuries to accept their new "normal" by adopting an active lifestyle through participation in physical, recreational or sporting activities. About the South Pole Allied Challenge
The South Pole Allied Challenge expedition is organized by Walking With the Wounded, a United Kingdom-based charity that funds extreme expeditions for wounded servicemen and women. With His Royal Highness Prince Harry as expedition patron, the challenge will see three teams of ill and injured serving and former military personnel from the Commonwealth (Australia and Canada), the United Kingdom and the United States race to the South Pole from November to December 2013.
