Canada's Fire Chiefs Welcome New Measures to Strengthen Rail Safety

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 11/21/13 -- Today, the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs (CAFC) issued the following statement in response to the announcement by Transport Minister Lisa Raitt of a new protective direction issued to rail companies:
"Canada's Fire Chiefs applaud the Government of Canada for taking important steps to require rail companies to share information with municipalities and emergency responders concerning the nature and volume of dangerous goods transported through their communities. We are pleased that the Minister of Transport has listened to the concerns and recommendations of the Fire Service and Canada's municipalities and we welcome this significant step forward in improving Canada's rail safety regulations.
As the voice of the Canadian Fire Service and our country's 120,000 firefighters, we have been working with the Minister of Transport and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities to put forward recommendations to ensure emergency responders have the information, training and emergency planning protocols to protect Canadians and our communities when incidents occur. This announcement is an important step in the right direction and will help local Fire Chiefs and their municipalities by providing them with information on the dangerous goods travelling through their communities.
We are encouraged by the Government of Canada's attention to our recommendations and we will continue to work with the Minister, Transport Canada and our municipal partners to strengthen rail safety in Canada."
