Terrorism remains the leading threat to Canada's national security

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 09/17/14 -- The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, issued a statement regarding the case of Hiva Mohammad Alizadeh, who pleaded guilty today to making or having in his possession an explosive substance with intent to endanger life or cause serious damage to property, for the benefit of a terrorist group. Mr. Alizadeh has been sentenced to 24 years in federal prison.

"As we see every day in the media, the terrorist threat is a global issue and threats to Canada's national security are very real. This case reminds us that Canada's Counter-terrorism Strategy is working to identify threats and protect Canadians.

Our Strategy serves as a strong foundation for a safer and more resilient Canada. With its four key principles of prevent, detect, deny and respond, the Strategy guides the work of more than 20 federal departments and agencies, and recognizes the importance of effective relationships. Along with our key allies, our Government of Canada continues to work with our communities, law enforcement agencies, the private sector-and with Canadians themselves- to fight terrorism.

Issues of national security are very complex, and it takes the dedicated work of many law enforcement, intelligence and legal partners to do the intricate and sensitive work to successfully see a case such as this one through. Today's outcome is a clear sign that the work and the dedication of professionals prevented Canadians from potential harm.

Through legislation and policy, including passing the Combating Terrorism Act, which makes it a crime to travel or attempt to travel for terrorist purposes, we are giving law enforcement and the justice system the tools they need to take action on terrorism. We are responding to the threat and stating-unequivocally-that the Government of Canada will not tolerate terrorist activity.

We remain unwavering in our commitment to the safety and security of Canadians. We will continue to take all appropriate action to counter terrorist threats to Canada, its citizens and its interests around the world. "
