Wärtsilä wins power plant orders from Greece and Cyprus - strengthens its leading position in the Mediterranean

(Thomson Reuters ONE) - Wärtsilä Corporation, Press release, 20 July 2009 at 1.45 pm localtimeWärtsilä, a leading supplier of flexible power plants and services tothe decentralized power generation market, has received two powerplant orders from the Eastern Mediterranean islands. The combinedvalue of these orders is approximately EUR 40 million. One order hasbeen received to supply power generation equipment to the island ofLesvos belonging to Greece, and the other to Cyprus. These orderswere taken into the order book during the first half of this year. The contracts represent a total output of 72 MWe, The two new ordersbring Wärtsilä's power generating capacity in the region, eitherinstalled or on order, to more than 600 MW.Local electricity demand surges dramatically during the touristseason when the resident population of some 120,000 people isoutnumbered many times over by tourists. Wärtsilä's decentralisedpower plants offer a flexible and highly efficient means of meetingthese increases in demand, whilst at the same time creating lowenvironmental impact. The strict environmental protection norms of the EU require that thepower plants are equipped with the best available harmful emissionreduction technologies, and that they use very low sulphur contentfuel oils. The Wärtsilä engines are equipped with the latest lowemission technical solutions. Furthermore, since the Cyprus plant islocated near the town of Larnaca, it is also equipped with a separatenitrogen oxides reduction system to remove most of the flue gasnitrogen oxides."There is a strong need to meet this seasonal demand for energy sinceit has such an impact on the local economy. The key requirements arefor heavy duty units that can run on heavy fuel oil at full powerduring the five summer months while, at the same time, having thelowest emissions. Wärtsilä has shown repeatedly that we can meetthese criteria, which is why we have such a strong market positionhere. Furthermore, Wärtsilä is the only company offering 24/7 servicein the islands," says Harry Lindroos, Regional Director, EasternEurope, Wärtsilä Power Plants.Wärtsilä has supplied power plants to the Eastern Mediterraneanislands continuously since 1986.For further information, please contactMr Harry LindroosRegional Director, Eastern EuropeWärtsilä Power PlantsTel. +358 40 501 9257e-mail: harry.lindroos(at)wartsila.comMr Atte PalomäkiGroup Vice President, Communications & Branding,Wärtsilä CorporationTel: +358 40 5476390e-mail: atte.palomaki(at)wartsila.comWärtsilä in briefWärtsilä is a global leader in complete lifecycle power solutions forthe marine and energy markets.
