(Thomson Reuters ONE) - PÿYRY PLC Press release 7 September 2009 at 2.00 p.m.PÿYRY AWARDED REHABILIATION OF THIRTY-TWO DAMS IN SRI LANKAThe Ministry of Agricultural Development and Agrarian Services of theGovernment of Sri Lanka has awarded Pöyry a consultancy servicescontract for the safety assessment, design of rehabilitation worksand preparation of tender documentation for thirty-two existing dams.Pöyry's share of this assignment, to be financed by the World Bank,is about EUR 4.5 million and includes an option of supervision ofremedial works for selected dams.The study and design phase will be completed by 2012 and will coverthe evaluation of the present condition of the 32 dams, studies todetermine the remedial works needed, and detail design for tendering.Implementation of remedial works for selected schemes will last from2011 to 2012.The dams are used principally for irrigation storage but also forwater supply, flood control and hydropower generation. The oldest ofthese dams are embankments, which have now been in operation fornearly 2000 years; the newest ones are the large multi-purpose damsbuilt on the major rivers in the 1980's and 1990's.Pöyry has many years experience of the study and design of dams,hydropower schemes and irrigation works in Sri Lanka.Pöyry is a global expert in consulting and engineering.
